The Origin of qRIP Memories

“qRIP Memories was created out of the most devastating of circumstances. My brother John was only two years older than me, and we were inseparable. We even worked in the same industry and often together. John was a well-known voiceover artist for companies like Nissan, Coca-Cola, CUB and Channels 7, 9 & 10, whilst I was an award winning sound engineer, producing commercials aired on national radio and TV stations.

John and I regularly spent our Saturdays driving from Melbourne to Gippsland, where we grew up, sharing memories of our youth. It often intrigued me how much John enjoyed walking through cemeteries here and there, stopping to read the inscriptions and imagining the lives of those who had passed on.

But on June 29, 2020, at 1:30pm, when I went to visit John at his home, I was shattered to find he had passed away. I was inconsolable. As if coping with his passing wasn’t unbearable enough, I was further stressed by the idea of having to encapsulate his life on a headstone.

This led me to create an online dedication to him incorporating his voiceover work, evocative photos and a cinema commercial he voiced that was played in movie theatres around Australia. I then linked the entire testimonial to a QR code and permanently affixed it to his headstone.
